Norwegian Hydrogen has announced a significant investment in a new green hydrogen production facility located in Rjukan, Telemark, Norway. This strategic move aligns with the company's broader objective to expand green hydrogen production throughout the Nordic region.
The upcoming facility is slated for completion by the end of 2027 and will feature an electrolysis capacity of 25 megawatts (MW). This positions it among the largest plants of its kind in the Nordic countries, with potential plans for future expansion. Notably, Norwegian Hydrogen is considering the initiation of production activities even before the plant reaches full operational status.
Jens Berge, CEO of Norwegian Hydrogen, emphasized the project's significance, stating,
"This is an important milestone. The Rjukan facility will be important for both us and our customers, and we’re excited to get started."
A key component of the project is a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Tinn Energi, ensuring a stable supply of renewable electricity. This agreement underscores the project's commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency.
In terms of technological collaboration, Norwegian Hydrogen has entered into a letter of intent with Nel, a prominent hydrogen company, for the provision of a 25 MW pressurized alkaline electrolysis plant. This partnership aims to leverage Nel's advanced technology, which has received support from the EU Innovation Fund, to enhance the efficiency and output of the Rjukan facility.
The genesis of this project traces back to Norwegian Hydrogen's acquisition of the hydrogen initiative from Aker Horizons in January 2025. As part of the acquisition terms, Aker Horizons retains an option to reinvest in the project at a later stage, reflecting the project's promising potential and strategic value.
Strategically situated, the Rjukan facility is poised to become a central hub in the green energy transition, supplying green hydrogen to customers in southern Norway and parts of Sweden under competitive terms. This development not only enhances the region's energy infrastructure but also contributes to broader environmental goals.
This initiative is part of Norwegian Hydrogen's broader efforts to establish itself as a leading entity in the green hydrogen sector. The company is actively developing facilities in Norway and Denmark, with several projects in the pipeline. Notably, in June 2023, Norwegian Hydrogen unveiled plans for a 270 MW green hydrogen production facility at Ørskog in Norway, further underscoring its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
Through these strategic investments and partnerships, Norwegian Hydrogen is reinforcing its dedication to advancing green hydrogen production, thereby playing a pivotal role in the Nordic region's transition towards sustainable energy.
